About an hour by train from Hamburg rises the picturesque town of Lübeck.
Once the capital of the medieval Hanseatic League, the city preserves so many of fine examples of redbrick Gothic architecture, that it has been enrolled of a prestigeous World Heritage list by UNESCO.

Holstentor (Holsten Gate) the main entrance to the old city hosts Museum Holstentor,
where you can discover the local history with the model of the city in the shape from 17th century.
The model of Kogge vessel brings back the times of Hanseatic glory and power of the city.

Rathaus
Although rebuilt several times since the foundation in 14th century, the city hall is still one of the oldest and most beautiful halls in Germany.

The church of St.Mary features the highest brick vaulting in the world ( 36 m ).
Its construction has been followed in many of the churches around the Baltic sea.

House of Günter Grass

Another museum connected with a Nobel writer is a bit more controversial, because of the World War II epizod in the history of the author of ‘Tin drum’. Although Grass was born in Gdansk (Danzig) he lives near Lübeck for a long time.

Marzipan

One more reason to visit Lübeck is a sweet almond bread popular worldwide.
The city claims to be the birthplace of Marzipan, which according to the local story, has been invented, where the citizens started to grain the almonds due to shortage of bread caused by the long lasting siege.
