One of the few surviving 19th century jails, the former St Augustine jail, built in 1891, housed prisoners for over 60 years. It was turned into a tourist attraction in 1953. Aside from housing 72 prisoners, the jail was the home of the sheriff and his wife.
The sheriff’s living quarters, the kitchen, the different groups of cells (male , female and solitary) and the execution room are available for touring. There is a large collection of used weapons on the second floor.
