The privately owned complex of 19 buildings is one of the most well known landmarks of New York.
It became the inspiration for many cities to create a harmonic mixture of urban facilities with human environment.

When in 1928 Rockefeller leased the garden from Columbia University at first he aimed to construct the new opera house.
The Depression, which outbreak following year forced Rockefeller to change the original plans. Between 1931 and 1940
there were erected 14 buildings providing the jobs for over 200 000 of workers.
The main design has been developed by the group of architects led by Raymond Hood. Various works of art and architectonic details inside and outside of the buildings were created by 30 temporary artist. Five more buildings were gradually added till 1973 following the original style.

One of the fist buildings, which immediately gain popularity was Radio City Music Hall hosting performances of Rockettes. It is also known for famous Christmas and Easter shows. During winters near the building adorned with over 20 thousand of lights stands 20m high Christmas tree. The open space between the buildings features winter skate rink and an opened restaurant and cafe area.

Among the companies renting the offices at Rockefeller Center are General Electrics, which occupies 70 floor building in the middle, Time warner Publishing, Exxon and Simon & Schuster publishing company.

The latest attraction is Top of the Rock, an observatory on the 67th–70th floors featuring 360° panoramic view of the city.
