Within over thirty years of existence Cancun turned into a five-star megaresort, and became the most popular destinations in Mexico, even more attractive by the fact that the tourist season lasts here between the December and April and the beaches are the same or better than all over Caribbean and Florida.
But the long chain of beach hotels resembles more Vegas than Miami, with all shopping malls , clubs and restaurants.
Most of main hotel chains are located along Isla Cancún, a strip of white sand some 17 km long which first runs straight ito the sea to turn right after a moment, like a snake swivels is body, and that feature is depicted in the name – Cancun in Mayan means ‘Golden Snake’. The tail of the ‘snake’ features old Mayan ruins at Tulum, and within a day-trip distance is also the famous Chichén-Itzá.
As the strip of sand is rather modern one , the visitors who want to taste more authentic Mexican feeling may choose the accommodation in nearby Ciudad Cancún, the old town, with convenient suttle connection of Isla Cancun beaches.
Condos, villas or other hideaways are also a popular option around Yucatan penisula.
The sea shore got its reputation due to tourquoise waters and white sand, tormented by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
After the hurricane the great efforts were made to put the beaches into the original shape, and today the guests can still enjoy the sun on public beaches, that include Playa Linda (Pretty Beach), Playa Langosta (Lobster Beach), Playa Tortuga (Turtle Beach), and Playa Caracol (Snail Beach).
Nichupté Lagoon is the place, where you can rent a sailboat, jet ski, windsurfer, or water ski, and if you want to see more, you can join Jungle a tour, which leads through picturesque mangrove and coral reef areas.
There are numerous plcaes to dive and snorkel among colurful fish and turtle creatures, also there is a possibility to swim with dolphins in a marine park’s aquarium of Parque Nizuc.
Visitors, who wat to get a closer look to the famous coral reef can consider Cozumel, one of the best diving locations in the whole world.
The other activities include horseback riding, tennis, teeing in one of several golf courses,
and shopping either on local mercado, or large duty-free malls.
Bullfighting is still present in Cancun, held every week on bullring Plaza de Toros.
Other popular fighting around Cancun is the one with a hangover after ‘la vida loca’ night spend in one of the clubs, discos ended with closer look and feel of the sandy beach.
Museo Arqueológico de Cancún and Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano give a good inside view of traditional ancient and temporary Mexican art, looking at the masks, religious artifacts and regional costumes will be a good attraction to every visitor.
